If your reading this you probably need no introduction to Hair Police, but in case you don’t know who they are.. Hair Police are a psych/noise/harsh-punk band from Kentucky & Michigan, USA made up of Mike Connelly, Trevor Tremaine & Robert Beatty. While having the sold foundation of have the make up of a traditional band (Connelly plays guitar, Tremaine plays drums) each member also has the additional credit of “vocals, tapes & electronics”. Building on the template of a harsh punk band, the members of Hair Police add in their collective experience and sonic influences from the myriad of other side projects they’re involved in. Connelly brings in the hash vocals and pure noise of Wolf Eyes and Tremaine & Beatty bring the free form experimentalism from paying in C. Spencer Yeh’s Burning Star Core.
This release itself is a CDR & one sided 7″ from John Olson’s American Tapes label. It was produced in late 2007 (surprisingly for an AT release there’s no date stamp on it) in aid of Hair Police’s ill fated US tour which ended prematurely after they crashed their tour van. The music contained on the record and CDR is not the usual balls out punk/noise thing Hair Police do but it closer to the kind of stuff Mike Connelly is currently doing solo in Failing Lights. There’s no drums on the entire record and most of the tracks are free form harsh noise experiments. I have a feeling that this is really just a Hair Police record in name only and it wouldn’t surprise me if this is really just Connelly on his own with just electronics. If your into the whole American Tapes/Gods Of Tundra etc world and all the side projects that go along with it or just want to be to listen to the release for the sake of it’s rarity then I would definitely recommend getting this and having a listen. Otherwise I certainly wouldn’t advise someone only just getting into the noise world to get this..
