Portland, OR based Grouper was a relaxing way to start the second day of ATP insanity, as many concertgoers were still shaking off hangovers or reeling from the shock and awe sonic assault of the Jesus Lizard who closed out the previous night. In start contrast, Grouper is a one-woman show using tape loops and other effects (with the loops recorded live to old-school cassette) to create a layered, blissful sound.

Sound again came out beautifully. You will hear some spots at the end of each song where I tried to compress down the crowd clapping. It’s a touch abrupt, which seemed a bit unavoidable as this was the quietest set at ATP. Crowd was very quiet other than d-bag wannabe “photographers” and their digital cameras clicking at some points. Hope you enjoy!

This is a pretty amazing double set by Hanson Records owner Aaron Dilloway & AA Records owner Nate Young.. The review of the gig in The Wire (by Nick Richardson) described it as: “Beginning with low-key junkyard atmospherics, wobbly trash percussion and wheedling synth sound, he [Young] launched into a piece of Poe-like spoken word “Someone help me out of the bottomless pit..”  [..] Young used mouth sounds, captured via a contact miked harmonica, to probe the emissions of his ancient equipment, meshing flickering electronics, viscous slobbe and feedback – like velociraptors chewing on movie projectors. [..] Meanwhile, sonically, the whorls of formant shifting synth tones Dilloway sent winging around the room, bristling with bright thorns of noise were in a similar ballpark to Haswell & Hecker’s UPIC compositions. But what made his set particularly astonishing was the gap between the sounds Dilloway was producing and what he appeared to be doing on stage. Instead of a guy hunched over a laptop, he was physically engaged with his equipment to an extraordinary degree. He had two mics lodged inside his mouth into which he leered and rasped, rocking about like a lunatic while ripping fistfuls of tape from the machinies in front of him. Awesome to behold.”

Only image I can find for this gig is this poster art designed by flickr user roney_is_phony who seems to do a lot of pretty sweet looking art. This recorded was done by the owner of Three Lobed Records who has recently been uploading quite a lot of excellent live recordings to DaD recently, pretty sure I have the Mouthus recording from this show too if anyone wants it at a later date.

As for the show itself it’s a pretty quiet & restrained YS set though it could be that the quiteness is actually due to a low recording level (particulaly obvious near the end of the set) but it’s a good slow burner. Reminds me of their Descension release.
